Aspasmos (The Visitation), Ο Ασπασμός

This icon depicts the meeting of the Theotokos and her cousin Elizabeth, both carrying their children through divine promise—Mary with Christ and Elizabeth with John the Forerunner. At Mary’s greeting, the unborn John leapt in Elizabeth’s womb, recognising the presence of the Lord. This moment, known as the Aspasmos (the greeting), expresses a quiet joy and revelation, affirming Christ’s divinity even before His birth.
